East Street Arts and pocagallery are delighted to announce that artist Rebecca Jones will be artist-in-residence at pocagallery in this summer. Rebecca’s practice revolves around the process of understanding and interpreting an event or happening through various modes of communication. Words, graphic notation and language are central elements in her work. Rebecca plans for the residency are to develop new work that stems from observing, recording and interpreting sound material gathered at the festival Semana Grande in Bilbao. She will document her experience in the gallery’s blog and the work will be presented in Leeds later in the year.
“I find the scoring of events enthralling – this loss and gain through translation of one medium to another creates intriguing material. Material researched will be further removed and worked upon due to the cultural, linguistic and artistic differences a Leeds based artist will inevitably discover when working in Bilbao. I often use paper to construct scores from the sound material. Given the opportunity I would like to take advantage of the window space within the Poca Gallery, using light as a catalyst for the score. Relating the continuous nature of the festival, the score will operate by day and by night. I would like to experiment with wax, (kozo) paper and local food within the notation.”
